Sciatica Pain Relief Treatment
Suffering from severe nerve pain can be debilitating, and a multitude of sources can cause pain of varying degrees. A nerve that often causes such pain is the sciatic nerve. This nerve starts in one’s lower back and continues down the back of each leg, and pain in this nerve is called sciatica. Sciatica can be treated using chiropractic spinal adjustment, heat or ultrasound, muscle stimulation, ice or cold therapy, and cold-laser therapy.
Sciatica pain can be in the lower back, reach down to the toes, or occur anywhere in between. This pain can range from minimally irritating to severely debilitating, depending on the individual. Additionally, symptoms of sciatica can vary just like the severity level or location. Some suffer from continuous pain in their backsides, while others experience a shooting pain that makes it difficult to stand. Other times the leg or foot has discomfort, and one can experience weakness, difficulty moving, or numbness. It’s also common for individuals to have a burning or tingling in the legs. These symptoms, while varying, are all caused by irritation in the lumbosacral spine and the lower lumbar.
While the pain is caused by the irritation in the same spot on the body, there are various causes for the irritation itself. Often the cause is medical, such as degenerative disc disease, lumbar spinal stenosis, pregnancy, spinal subluxation (misaligned vertebra), and spondylolisthesis (one vertebra slips over another). Lifestyle situations could also contribute to sciatica pain, for example lack of exercise, obesity, using a mattress that is too soft, and wearing high heels frequently.
As you may know, chiropractic care takes a holistic approach. As a result, treatment for sciatica pain often includes recommended changes to lifestyle. Exercise frequency and body weight can affect sciatica, so your nutrition and overall diet will be a point of discussion throughout treatment. We may recommend a home exercise program for you to complete during your treatment. Frequently, losing weight and regularly exercising positively contributes to controlling the pain that results from sciatica.
When working with your chiropractor to determine your treatment regiment, we will discuss your lifestyle as well as your body and physical wellness. Be sure to include your entire medical history as well as any conditions you are experiencing or medications you are taking. We will also make note of any activities and dietary habits.
By being open and honest with your doctor, he or she will be able to build a complete program to manage your sciatica. To give you an idea of what to expect, your program will likely include exercises to be completed at home as well as office sessions. If dietary changes or improvements are needed, suggestions will be made within your plan.
Our goal with this total treatment program is not only to improve your sciatica, but to make your total body and lifestyle healthier. With the correct chiropractic care and potentially making some small changes, you can enjoy a fit and active lifestyle!
